Correct dog bite is often discussed and debated among dog men, owners, vets and people for the welfare of dogs. If it is true that that first dogs had perfect bites that were neither of the fore-mentioned, then where did incorrect bites originate? Most of the health issues that we see in our dogs today stems from poor breeding practices such as inbreeding. Let’s examine the typical mutt for a moment. It is widely known that mutts usually have longer healthier lives than pure bred dogs do. In the process of us trying to gain popularity with kennel clubs, we have destroying our dogs to the point that they are falling apart.
Pitbulls and Bullies With Underbite And Overbite
30 years ago it was not so common to find Bully type dogs with bite problems.
For example, let’s look at the American Pitbull Terrier. As inbreeding became more popular, and other bully type dogs were introduced into the Pitbull gene pool, more dogs began having health problems, including bite issues.
Today, many of our American Bullies have a bite, or shot, problem.
Let’s discuss a dog’s underbite. Dogs teeth are perfectly aligned when the upper incisors slightly overlaps the the bottom ones. The distance between both sets of incisors should be so close that they actually touch each other. This is usually referred to as a scissor bite. Today, many of our dog breeds are not bred for this perfect bite. Bulldog Breeds such as the Olde English Bulldog, English Bulldogs and the Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog, have been altered to the point that it is often difficult for them to get what should be an easy breath.
Sadly, most bite problems are hereditary. Sometimes a puppy may retain its baby teeth too long and this forces the incoming adult teeth to shift slightly, causing it to be misaligned. This condition may not be genetic.
What Is An Underbite ?
When there is a noticeable gap between the upper and lower incisors, with the lower jaw protruding outwards.
It is important to know that underbites come in different levels, and that any repeated breeding with undershot dogs will produce the same and even worse. One dog may have a smaller underbite than another. Nevertheless is still a an unnatural and at times difficult for them to chew their meals. In cases of bad bites, the skeletal dog’s is compromised. Breeders should not breed dogs with bite problems.
What Is An Overbite
An Overbite is just the opposite of an underbite. In this circumstance, the upper incisors are protruding outwards to the point that they do not touch the upper. Some cases are more prominent and serious than others. In many cases of overbite, especially in puppies, it can become a very painful situation when the lower incisors gore into the upper mouth. This even occurs in breeds where incorrect bites are deemed acceptable.
An overshot bite is always a hereditary issue that can be passed on with breeding. Experts have said that an undershot bite is not always hereditary. If your dogs carry the hereditary dental malocclusions gene, it should not be bred. Though it is not good for any dog to have malocclusions, because it is not natural and human tampered, certain breeds are bred for these very traits.
In this case it will be accepted by the kennel club.
I do not agree with this though.
This does not apply to brachycephalic dogs, in which malocclusion is a breed characteristic.
